What do you eat when you travel?

We can already smell the beach, mountains, forest trails, and soft, fine sand walks. We are looking forward to going on holiday. However, we are also lazy about the time it takes to get there and all the preparations.

We must not forget that the trip begins when we pick up our suitcases and head to our destination, whether by car, bus, train, or plane.

Therefore, starting to enjoy the trip will also depend on how we eat during the journey to our desired destination, so the logical thing before leaving will be to ask ourselves: What should we eat during our trips?

So what makes us so nervous?

  • Dehydrate us.
  • Not going to the bathroom well.
  • Fatigue.
  • Dizziness and nausea.

There are many ideas for eating well to prevent our body from suffering these symptoms.

Plan to eat well on your trips

Try to follow these main premises in your choice:

  • Nutritious foods (nuts, fruit, dates, etc.)
  • Light foods (with lots of water and fiber).
  • Avoid cooked foods (omelets, chicken fillets, fish, etc.).
  • If you need cooling, get a small portable refrigerator.
  • Use a Tupperware that closes properly.
  • Easy to eat (no sauce dripping or crumbling).
  • Crunchy foods (to prevent ear strain and blockage due to pressure changes).
  • Avoid flatulent foods and drinks (carbonated soft drinks).
  • Avoid very salty foods (e.g., salty snacks, salted nuts, fried foods, and packaged sandwiches), as they can promote dehydration.

Food ideas for your travels

Water and infusions

You can give your drinks a special touch by adding cinnamon, lemon or orange slices, natural fruit juice, mint leaves, or cranberries. If you freeze the ingredients and store them in a portable cooler, you will have cool water throughout the trip.

Nuts

They will provide you with nutrients and lots of energy. In addition, they will help regulate your bowel movements due to their high fiber content. Just don’t forget to drink water!

Dried fruits

Dates, raisins, pineapple, mango, banana, or dehydrated apples are many of the options that we can use. They are ideal because they contain a large amount of fiber, have a sweet flavor, and do not spoil with changes in temperature.

Fresh fruit

Make sure they are well preserved in the refrigerator or at room temperature. Bananas, cherries, a watermelon container, or an apple can be good allies to combat dehydration and heat.

Homemade bread or cookies

These preparations can be made in advance, and they include fruits, nuts, and even eggs. Since they are thoroughly cooked, the risk of contamination by eggs is practically non-existent.

Sandwiches with healthy fillings

We can include sandwiches with quality ingredients such as wholemeal flour, legume or seed flour, sandwich bread, or empanada dough. Some of the most interesting fillings can be aged cheese, Serrano ham with grated tomato, hummus with arugula, spreadable cheese with walnuts, or homemade escalivada pâté.

Cold creams

Gazpachos, salmorejos, vichyssoise, etc. Cold creams, well packaged, can be a very convenient, hydrating, refreshing, and nutritious option for our trip. Ultimately, all the ingredients we want are available in just one sip.

Homemade energy bars

Forget the chocolate and molasses bars you buy in stores. You can make this recipe home with all the nuts you want, dried fruit, and the chocolate or honey you like the most. Just mix the chosen ingredients and let them cool until they solidify. Wrap or store them in an airtight container, and your bars will be ready.

Fresh salads

Add vegetables and fruits such as cherry tomatoes, cucumber, carrot, onion, pepper, or apple to pasta, rice, or potatoes. Add a splash of lemon or vinegar to prevent the vegetables and fruits from oxidizing. Include nuts, seeds, or raisins. They will give it a touch, and it will be very nutritious.

Advantages of preparing your food when traveling

  • It is much cheaper.
  • You make it easier to eat healthier.
  • You get more nutrients.
  • Having more availability optimizes travel time (you don’t have to wait to stop at a gas station).
  • It’s up to you (you may not find something you like in a store)

Now comes the most crucial part: preparing your backpack!

Remember to keep your food in a properly sealed container at a suitable temperature. This will prevent our backpacks from getting dirty and our food rancid.

Enjoy every moment of your trip, and don’t forget to try the local cuisine. But before you return home, reorganize your food backpack; it will be an ideal trip.
